For grown-ups: what does Year 1 learn?

These games follow the National Curriculum for England, Key Stage 1 (Year 1):

  • Number and place value: count to 100, read and write numbers, tens and ones, one more and one less.
  • Addition and subtraction: add and take away within 20, including missing-number problems.
  • Counting patterns: count in 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • Time: tell the time to the hour and half past.
  • Phonics: read real and made-up words using the sounds taught in Year 1, like the Phonics Screening Check.
  • Writing and spelling: capital letters and full stops, and common exception words such as said, was and they.
  • Science: animals (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians) and everyday materials.

Note: Phonics Pop uses made-up “alien” words, as in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. If your child finds them hard, sound the word out together slowly.

Tip: sit with your child for the first go, and talk about each answer together. More for grown-ups.
